Color printer gives Tektronix jump on Canon

Article Abstract:

Tektronix Inc (Beaverton, OR) plans to introduce a new color printer on Monday, Jun 17, 1991. The $9,995 product should put Tektronix in the lead in this area, ahead of Japanese competitors such as Canon. Tektronix's product, which is said to produce high-quality prints on plain paper as well as on various other materials ranging from cardboard to tissues, uses a solid, wax-based ink that is easier to handle than previous inks. Some industry analysts believe that the capability to use plain paper could touch off a demand for color printers in the office market. A US company in the lead in color printing is a surprise; computer printing is best exploited by Japanese companies> Even Hewlett-Packard, which does considerable business in laser printers, buys the 'engines' for its printers from Canon.

Kaleida shifts top executives amid delays

Article Abstract:

IBM and Apple's joint venture Kaleida Labs Inc's CEO Nathaniel Goldhaber is replaced as the company's release of multimedia software is further postponed. IBM's Michael Braun is chosen as Goldhaber's replacement. Kaleida is developing software that enables any multimedia machine to play any type of multimedia software. Goldhaber, who will remain with Kaleida as co-chairman, employed a hands-off style of management that resulted in the product delays. The licensing of a universal language for multimedia software applications is Kaleida's development aim. Standardization will ensure the proliferation of multimedia technology. Signing up licensees will be among Goldhaber's new responsibilities.
