I.B.M. does an about-face on pensions

Article Abstract:

International Business Machines Co. has expanded the number of older employees covered by its traditional retirement plan in response to employees' objections over being switched involuntarily to the new cash-balance pension plan. The plan, designed to reward younger employees earlier in their careers while forcing older employees to take 20% to 50% cuts in their accrued pensions, was so controversial that some IBM employees threatened to unionize and the IRS announced that it was delaying approval of other companies' pension conversions and would look into the matter. The Equal Opportunity Employment Commission said that it was going to evaluate if such pension conversions were in violation of age discrimination laws. IBM denied that the switch back to the original pension plan was in response to outside pressure from unions, government agencies or lawmakers or an effort to save the company money. IBM spokespeople said the conversion was legal, but the company decided to change back some older employees' pensions because of what the employees were telling them.
