IBM introduces line of workstations; industry analysts impressed by prices

Article Abstract:

Although almost every aspect of IBM's new workstation line was known before the official announcement, the company still managed to pull out a few surprises, particularly with its aggressive pricing. Most industry analysts expected the price for the entry level machines to be from $15,000 to $20,000, but IBM broke with tradition and set the price at a very competitive $13,000. The machine's high power will give it what one analyst called a price-performance ratio several times better than the competition. The question is whether IBM can push hard to maintain its performance edge as its competitors introduce machines that will rival it later this year. IBM plans to increase its share of the workstation market to between 15 and 20 percent. If IBM meets its goals, it could generate between $4 and $5 billion a year in revenue in what is the fastest growing segment of the computer industry.

IBM, a bit late, introduces tape storage library

Article Abstract:

IBM introduces a tape library fileserver automated storage device for mainframe computers, several years after Storage Technology Corp introduced a similar device. The IBM storage device is larger and slower than Storage Technology's, but IBM's device loads blank tapes better and the software is more efficient. Storage Technology controls the $1 billion annual market for such storage devices and has sold about 4,000 tape libraries at $400,000 each. Industry analysts expect that IBM will sell only about 100 storage devices in 1993, after the products are introduced early in the year. Storage Technology is expected to sell 2,000 storage devices in 1993.
