Apple, Novell join to develop new software

Article Abstract:

Apple is making the first major effort to port its proprietary Macintosh operating system to a rival computer. The company is teaming with Novell Inc to combine the Mac software with Novell's DR DOS, a version of Microsoft's DOS operating system. The resulting software will be able to run on personal computers made with Intel Corp microprocessors. Insiders say the product will be a hybrid, and not exactly replicate the Mac's software. In combining DR DOS with the Mac software, designers may have to sacrifice performance. Apple faces a delicate challenge: it wants to expand the Mac's share of the microcomputer market, currently about 12 percent to 14 percent, while limiting rivals' ability to clone the Mac. Many marketing and licensing details need to be worked out. The new software may have only limited appeal, but if a big PC vendor such as Compaq starts selling Mac-like computers, it could have a great impact.

Apple seeks to ensure programs for Rhapsody will run on Mac

Article Abstract:

Apple is developing a new operating system, code named Rhapsody, due to be released in the summer of 1998. The company will describe its plans for the operating system to approximately 1,800 programmers at its conference for Apple software developers on May 13, 1997. Apple software developers are unconvinced however that Rhapsody will be successful. To ensure that software developers create applications for Rhapsody, Apple is developing software that will enable Rhapsody programs to also run on the current Macintosh operating system. Apple is also creating the software for Microsoft's Windows operating system. This will allow programs written for Rhapsody to be run on Windows, which impressed developers.
