St. Paul Cos. expects catastrophe losses to reach $175 million

St. Paul Cos. is expecting to post a total of $175 million in pretax catastrophe losses for the third-quarter of 1998. St. Paul is only the first of many other property-casualty insurers who are expected to be posting losses resulting from hurricane damage during the quarter. The company is expecting to see $35 million to $45 million in operating earnings due to the damage caused by Hurricane Bonnie during the fall of 1998.

SunAmerica seen posting higher profit

SunAmerica Inc. will post a 43% improvement in its net income for the third-quarter of 1998. The quarter ended on June 30, 1998. The company's quarterly operating earnings are expected to see a 30% rise. SunAmerica is a major provider of retirement financial products and services. The company's quarterly revenue is expected to reach $2.6 billion. This is more than double the amount during the same period in 1997.
