Improving industry's image

Article Abstract:

Great Britain has declared 1986 Industry Year to improve the public's appreciation of business and industry throughout that nation, and counteract the historic national tendency to treat business as a necessary but ill thought of endeavor. The intellectual bias of British citizens against business is being fought with public relations activities ranging from competitions and festivals celebrating industry to conferences and trade shows designed to educate the public as to the societal benefits realized from having a strong industrial base. The Industry Year public relations message is primarily that business creates wealth. This message may be too simplistic and pragmatic to gain the widespread support that the campaign is seeking. It is argued that the competence of business people on a day to day level does more to promote industry than can special events planning.

Governance and performance: goodwill hunting

Article Abstract:

A fresh perspective on corporate governance that focuses on performance and leadership is needed. Contemporary governance practices that emphasize short-term financial performance are beneficial but also have a detrimental impact on the societal role of corporations. A suggestion is presented for addressing social expectations while enabling corporations to succeed in an environment marked by stiffer competition, technical innovations and globalization. This recommended approach mandates a reinvention of traditional financial performance in such a way that it makes the creation of goodwill as the main driver of shareholder value. This requires leadership to be refocused on generating the value of long-term stakeholder relationships. This approach would help locate the added-value of leadership and forge stronger, more successful businesses.

Strategic portfolio analysis concepts are related to accepted theories of product life cycles, with a special emphasis on the management of decentralized and diversified corporations. An individual corporation's competitive strengths can be assessed by using observed product life cycles and experience curves. Strategic corporate plans are also related to market dynamics and industry phenomena.
