In Favor of Quotas

Article Abstract:

Two steel industry spokesmen, Harry Holiday and Bob Peabody, gave their views about the industry with Barrons Magazine. They believe the large amount of imported steel coming into the United States is coming in illegally, so they would first of all like to see the law enforced. Some steel made abroad is subsidized and then denied access to any market but the country's own and the United States. They do not believe free trade exists in the world. They are behind a bill that would limit steel imports to fifteen per cent of the American market. These two men believe that in order for the major steel companies to produce a competitively priced product they must get wage concessions from union workers. If workers will not agree to wage cuts, steel cannot be regarded as a viable investment. To improve productivity many steel companies are investing in new equipment.
