Indexes of U.S. stock prices from 1802 to 1987

Article Abstract:

Several US stock price indexes were analyzed to obtain information about stock prices between 1802 and 1987. The indexes used for the analysis included the Smith and Cole indexes of bank, insurance, and railroad stock prices; the Macaulay index of railroad stock prices; the Cowles index of New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) stock prices and dividends; the Dow Jones indexes of NYSE stock prices; and Standard and Poor's composite index. The analysis provided monthly data for returns from 1802 to 1987 and daily data for returns from 1885 to 1987. A surprising homogeneity was found in the series over time, and seasonal patterns were found to be similar in both the 19th and 20th centuries.

How to choose transfer prices for FSCs

Article Abstract:

Under the provisions of the Tax Reform Act of 1984, a Foreign Sales Corporation (FSC) may use one of three methods to calculate U.S. income tax exemptions. Three alternative transfer prices were stipulated by the Tax Reform Act in order to prevent income tax evasion and transfer price abuses. These prices can be calculated using the foreign trade gross receipts (FTGR) method, the combined taxable income (CTI) method, or the arm's length transfer price method. The pricing method used will have a direct bearing on the amount of exempt income. The lower the transfer price, the higher the reported income and the exemption.
