Novell's net fell 20% for quarter in sign that turnaround may not be speedy

Article Abstract:

Novell's net earnings fell 20% in 1st qtr 1997, from $63.6 million in 1st qtr 1996 to $50.8 million and revenue declined 14%. Novell is facing increasing competition with Microsoft, as its NetWare environment is challenged by Windows NT 4.0. Novell's new product GroupWise, while its sales grew by 34%, is competing with similar products from Netscape and IBM. While the year-earlier figures reflect profits from sales of unsuccessful product lines, Novell's results still show the company struggling to find a plan to sustain growth. Executives note that international sales have been weaker than expected, and an overall slowdown in the PC market has hurt NetWare sales. The company is also in the midst of management reorganization. While Novell has developed new product and Web-enabled NetWare, the company is still looking for new ways to generate revenues.

Informix has net loss, one aide fewer; accounting, sales strategy play role in firm's woes

Article Abstract:

Informix has announced a 1st qtr loss of $140.1 million, a 93 cent drop per share and the resignation of its CFO, Alan Henricks. The company had shocked Wall Street on Apr 1st when it announced it would not meet analysts expectations by 40%, or $100 million. In the following month, its stock has fallen 52%, down to $7.25 a share. Approximately $170 million of Informix software sales in 1996 were to companies that have not yet resold most of the software. The high amount of unsold inventory has masked the industry's true demand for Informix's software. Informix chairman and CEO, Phillip E. White believes his mistake was in halting the marketing of publicized performance testes of the company's mainstream databases.
