Inside Intel, setbacks bring some anxiety

Article Abstract:

Despite its sparkling financial performance in recent years, Intel observers are concerned the microprocessor company's future. Intel's domination of that market has drawn the scrutiny of the Federal Trade Commission antitrust investigators. In addition the company faces threats from competitors, reduced personal computer demand and regional economic turmoil such as the Asian crises. Insider selling has increased despite Intel claims that things will likely improve. Computer companies have entered agreements with other microprocessor producers and are seeking lower microchip prices as computers face price erosion trends.

At $117, Dell's price does not compute

Article Abstract:

Dell Computer is highly favored by investors. The company manufacturers only those PCs for which it already has orders, thus it has eliminated one of the biggest costs to computer makers, inventory buildup. This manufacturing procedure helps to keep earning and margins up while other computer makers have suffered. Because Dell is the envy of an industry in a slump, its direct-selling model is the target of attack. Both IBM and Compaq recently announced that they, too will begin selling directly to large corporate customers.

Intel expected to delay release of chip set

Article Abstract:

Intel Corporation is expected to postpone the release of the 450NX chip set. The chip set is Intel's newest version of its Pentium II technology. The release of the 450NX or Xeon chip set could be postponed by as much as six to eight weeks. The set's release have been widely anticipated. The chips were originally scheduled to be released during the week of June 14-21, 1998. They are designed for high-end PC servers and work stations. The delay is the result of the discovery of an errata in the microprocessor.
