Article Abstract:

Providing liquidity to international financial markets and maintaining the stability of US markets have become important to insurance stock investors with the economic events in the Far East in 1997. Commercial casualty line prices have also deteriorated from 1994 through 1996 and this has affected 1997 insurance earnings. Other insurance sectors are weak as well, and these stocks could be disappointing for investors.

Insurance stocks have been impactred by the overall shift in the stock market, but problems which are specific to the sector also exist. The absence of visible earnings for many companies makes investors warry. Several firms are expected to take one-time charges against earnings for the year. Investors are advised to proceed with caution when considering insurance stocks at this time.

The Securities Brokerage Industry has experienced strong growth as the bull market continues during 1998. Brokerage firms have undergone much consolidation, which has further benefitted brokerage company stocks. These trends are not expected to change, although brokerage stocks are not recommended for long-term growth. The industry is considered to be volatile.
