Intel is expected to slash top chips' price; prediction spurs profit fears and damps stock prices in a souring PC market

Article Abstract:

Intel Corp. plans to drop the price of its Pentium 4 PC chip from $562 to $260 on Aug. 26, 2001. If this planned cut does not spur PC sales during the back-to-school period, Intel could slash prices further on Oct. 28, 2001. Advanced Micro Devices plans to stay competitive with Intel in its pricing policy and analysts predict lower earnings for both companies. The projected price war also saw share prices of both companies drop on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
