Intel to unveil series of computer-networking devices: move into lucrative area is likely to spur rivalry and push down prices

Article Abstract:

Intel is introducing a series of computer-networking devices. The move not only will allow Intel to debut in one of high technology's most lucrative segments, it also is blurring the lines that currently separate major partners, customers and rivals. Intel, with annual sales of $25 billion, will not immediately impact Cisco Systems and other market leaders. The company instead will challenge chip customers that offer networking sidelines, like Compaq and HP, and probably will lower hardware prices. Intel says the new devices will fit niches, especially in consumer and small-business markets. Intel also says its crucial role in PC technology evolution positions the company to strengthen computer communication. Other similar Intel moves include network interface cards, hubs, switches and routers.

An auction of chip patents may ignite bidding war for advantage over Intel

Article Abstract:

Silicon Valley companies are scrambling to acquire patents held by Exponential Technology a microprocessor maker that has gone out of business. The company's microprocessor-related patents could affect the pending litigation between DEC and Intel. Exponential plans to auction off its 45 issued and pending patents in the first week of Aug, 1997. Companies expected to make bids include Advanced Micro Devices, National Semiconductor, DEC and Intel. Among the patents Exponential is expected to have inventions that will aid in the developement of next generation microprocessor chips. Experts believe the patents include information to create a clone of Intel's Merced chip, which the company is developing with the help of HP.
