Intel's net rose in 3rd quarter; AMD had loss

Article Abstract:

Intel Corp reports that 3rd qtr earnings increased 139 percent, while Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) reports its second consecutive quarterly loss. On Fri, Oct 12, 1990, Intel's stock closed up 87.5 cents, at $30, while AMD's shares closed down 25 cents, at $4. Intel's 3rd qtr net income was $172 million, or 83 cents a share, up from $72 million, or 38 cents a share, in the previous year. Revenue was $1.01 billion, up 31 percent from $771.4 million a year ago. Analysts say Intel's 80386 microprocessor, which is one of the most successful microchips in the computer industry, accounts for much of the company's gains. AMD cites heavy investments and weakened sales for a loss of $17.8 million, or 25 cents a share, in the 3rd qtr. This compares with net income of $12.1 million, or 12 cents a share, in the year earlier.

Intel's profit rose by 72% to record in second quarter

Article Abstract:

Intel Corp's net income in the 2nd qtr 1990 rose a record 72 percent to $170.7 million, or 84 cents a share, from $99.3 million, or 53 cents a share in the same period in 1989. Revenue for the microprocessor chip maker rose 30 percent to a record $968.3 million from $747.3 million in the same period in 1989. Intel saw earnings increases of 43 percent and 48 percent in the previous two quarters and analysts expect the company to surpass $1 billion in the current quarter. The source of Intel's booming growth is demand for its 80386 and 80486 microprocessor chips, which carry high-profit margins.Demand is so strong that Intel does not expect to catch up with orders until the end of 1990. Intel's stock fell 75 cents a share to $50.50 a share in national over the counter trading on Jul 17, 1990.
