International economic outlook: developments and outlook of the European countries in transition

Article Abstract:

Major forecasts for the European Transition Countries indicate that growth will considerably be sluggish in the US in 1998 but will get back at the end of the year. European growth will stabilize the same year but will slowdown in 1999 to levels between 1.5% and 2%. Inflation rates will hasten in all major countries, while nominal interest rates may increase in all primary financial centers. Lastly, the German mark and the Japanese yen are predicted to rise in value against the dollar.

The Central European Free Trade Association is a geopolitical economic group that seeks to improve the economic standing of its member countries. As of 1996, the group's market size as measured in purchasing power parities stands at 7% of the European Union with average standard of living at $7000. The association's goal is to accelerate economic development to facilitate inclusion into the 15 member European Union.

Hard landing in NAFTA and solid growth in the enlarged European Union

Article Abstract:

NAFTA countries are expected to experience economic decline due to the Mexican peso's devaluation in Dec. 1994 while the EC countries will enjoy booming economies. The weighted output growth rate for the NAFTA area in 1995 is expected to decline by 2.7% over the previous year. The EC bond market, on the other hand, is projected to perform remarkably in 1995 due to a strong economy and favorable inflation rate.
