Interview with Harold A. Poling chairman, CEO, Ford Motor Company

Ford Motor Co Chmn and CEO Harold Poling has been greatly responsible for redirecting the company's operations to meet global competition. His position in a multinational long involved in foreign and domestic markets allows Poling to use the broader context when dealing with trade and productivity issues. Poling reflects on the reforms at Ford, the present and future prospects of the auto industry and offers suggestions on how to compete against the Japanese.

Doing the right things in Mexico

Article Abstract:

General Motors Delphi Division Managing Director Lee Crawford utilizes a combination of participatory management style and benevolent dictatorship strategy in the different plants in Mexico. Crawford prefers the participative management style because it is an easier management method and because employees tend to support what they have helped establish. He claims that human resource management is basically the same for different countries.

Managing a perpetual idea machine: inside the creator's mind

Article Abstract:

Thermo Electron Corp. founder and CEO George N. Hatsopoulos has fostered entrepreneurship in his company by allowing the transition of subsidiaries into separate business entities. These subsidiaries have become publicly traded firms with Thermo Electron retaining majority ownership. Hatsopoulos has also instilled a continuous improvement philosophy in employees by giving them a stake in these ventures.
