Inventory buffers in recoverable manufacturing

Article Abstract:

Inventory buffer decisions are relatively affected by different disassembly release mechanisms (DRM) methods in the flow of parts from the disassembly stage to the remanufacturing stage in the context of a remanufacturing environment. The proper location of these buffers is an important managerial decision because they are used to harmonize the flow of parts from disassembly, remanufacturing, to reassembly phases. It is shown that flush DRM is the best method to utilize for serial number specific parts in different levels of shop utilization.

Assessing the impact of JIT using economic theory

Article Abstract:

A study revealed that electronic firms in Ontario, Canada which implement just-in-time (JIT) approaches to manufacturing are believed to be more cost-efficient and distinct from the non-JIT group. The study employed the estimation of the constant elasticity of substitution translog (CES-TL) total cost system. Results were supported by several factors, including the difference of the elasticities calculated from the two groups, and the fact that JIT firms are better able to capture economies of scale and density.

Management initiatives and just-in-time manufacturing

Article Abstract:

A case-based research methodology is used to evaluate just-in-time (JIT) approaches to manufacturing and determine whether management initiatives are necessary. The theory tested six plants that adopt JIT manufacturing, and data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, direct observation, and documents. Out of the six management initiatives, only four were considered significant for both JIT flow, JIT quality and employee involvement.
