Japan bets on a wired world to win back its global niche

Article Abstract:

Despite years of recession, rigid government regulation, bottomed-out bank loans and general financial catastrophe, Japan may be reinventing itself for the new century, fusing technologies into new inventions geared toward the consumer. Japan is the largest exporter in the world because of clever manufacturing of technologies that make life more convenient. For example, Matsushita Electric Industrial's house of the future features appliances that are linked to each other as well as to outside services such as markets and schools. The government is hoping to connect corporations with universities to boost the country's high-energy entrepreneurial spirit.

Mixed signals from Japan on overhauling the banks

Article Abstract:

The month-old government of Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi appears to be indecisive over how to reform Japan's financially-plagued banking system. On August 19, 1998, a key member of Mr. Obuchi's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) stated that the government would work to protect all major Japanese banks from collapse. However, a spokesman for the party member affirmed that actions designed to prevent major bank collapses were still being studied.
