Government rule to let wine producers use labels that note benefits to health

The $11 billion wine industry got ATF approval to add two new labels to all wine sold in this country. One label advises consumers to check with their doctors about possible health benefits from drinking wine. The other one tells consumers how to get the federal government's "Dietary Guidelines for Americans." There are groups who will still oppose the decision and were also surprised by it. There might be 'tactics' used against it, said Sen. Strom Thurmond's spokesman.

Appeals panel backs Gallo on Chardonnay packaging

Article Abstract:

A federal appellate court in San Francisco, California ruled that E&J Gallo Winery has the right to sell chardonnay wine packages in a way similar to how Kendall-Jackson Whitney Ltd. sells its wine. The panel ruled that Gallo's bottle, label, and overall appearance of its Turning Leaf brand chardonnay is not a offshoot of Kendall-Jackson's Vintner's Reserve. Kendall-Jackson accused Gallo of attempting to sow confusion in order to increase sales of Turning Leaf.
