The optimal lifetime of capital goods and pricing policies for replacement components and repair costs

Article Abstract:

A case study of commercial aircraft was conducted to show how purchase price and repair costs are related to the determination of the economically optimal lifetime of capital goods with parts that are susceptible to wear and tear. Commercial aircraft owners favor a 'repair and hold on' strategy because repair is very cheap compared to the price of new aircraft. The longevity of aircraft also benefits manufacturers because it enables them to sell aircraft parts during periods of low demand for aircraft. These results show that parts manufacturers' pricing policy strongly influences the replacement decisions of capital goods owners.
