Britain moves to combat 'millenium bug': government is planning to spend $160 million in a global effort

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair unveiled a new $160 million program to combat the year 2000 computer date change problem. The program will develop new centers designed to help small and medium-sized businesses raise their awareness of the Millenium Bug. Other plans call for boosting financial assistance for the Government's Action 2000 campaign and training 20,000 troubleshooting 'bug busters.' Blair said Government grants will help young people, older unemployed or retired people assist companies as well as develop their own IT careers. Britain also would contribute $16.5 million to a proposed World Bank fund that would raise year 2000 awareness in developing countries, and press the issue at future European Union meetings, according to Blair. Opponents criticized Blair for waiting too long.

Serious tool for searches

Article Abstract:

Palladium Interactive's $59.95 Ultimate Family Tree Premiere family tree software is ideal for intense genealogical searches for ancestors and lost relatives. The CD-ROM differentiates itself from less formal counterparts by letting users prioritize facts for historical accuracy, according to sources and evidence. Users can convert completed family databases into a family tree or various other reports, such as a list of descendants or ancestors. Also included is a form letter, addressed to the correct authorities in the appropriate language, that seeks pertinent information from many foreign countries such as Germany, France, Sweden and Poland. Drawbacks include a rigid approach to contemporary extended families, as in listing those who are not blood relatives.
