Long range process design and compatibility among operations

Article Abstract:

Most processes are made up of a number of operations, some or all of which can have more than one optional technological method. This method can result in an exponential tie between the number of possible designs and the number of operation alternatives. Some of these options may not be realistic, however, because of incompatibilities among operation alternatives. One workable process design will have an alternative for each operation so that each operation is compatible with all the other design operations. An efficient algorithm is presented with computational results for locating all feasible designs based on considerations of compatibility.

A branch-and-fathom algorithm for the long range process design problem

Article Abstract:

A branch-and-fathom algorithm is developed which limits the necessary computation effort needed to identify workable designs and which is characterized by being more efficient than the partial enumeration algorithm. The branch-and-fathom algorithm is useful to address the long range process design problem, which includes the interaction between various operations.
