Looking ahead to look back

Article Abstract:

Economic indicators such as employment and personal income and spending reveal that 1998 was a good economic year for the US. Economic conditions are also expected to improve in 1999 due to an anticipated increase in consumer spending and exports. The two other special factors that will boost the economy in 1999 are the year 2000 computer problem and low oil prices. Economic growth is also expected in Europe due to the euro, Europe's single currency that will be inaugurated on Jan 1, 1999.

A new year, new data, and old issues

Article Abstract:

The US economy, economic policy and financial markets fared well in 1995, a trend expected to continue in 1996 albeit at a lower level. 1996 is expected to be marked by moderate inflation and growth, an absence of recession and stabilized employment. However, a radical increase in economic confidence is not expected within the year. Congressional debates on the budget will be monitored to evaluate their effects on the economy and economic policies.

Numbers and feelings

Article Abstract:

Economic progress is not expected to go beyond 2% for the 1st half of 1999. Although recession is not projected, this slow period of growth will be marked by volatile stock market activity and poor profit margins. The only possible catalyst for growth is pegged with consumer spending, as housing, international trade, business investment, inventories and other GDP indicators are projected to decline.
