Lotus rises on more takeover rumors amid continuing competitive pressures

Article Abstract:

Lotus shares rose 5%, up $2 to $42, fueled by rumors of a possible takeover by AT&T Corp and some analysts believe there is substance to the speculation. Lotus shares also rose in Dec 1994 when rumors were circulating about a possible takeover by Oracle. Lotus is pressured by tremendous competition from Microsoft in the desktop software arena, particularly its 1-2-3 spreadsheet software. However, sales of its communications products, such as E-mail and Notes workgroup software, are brisk. Experts have predicted the next round of speculation will probably include IBM, which is currently reorganizing its software division. Lotus is one of a small number of developers writing programs for the OS 2 platform, which competes with Microsoft's Windows and Windows NT. The Lotus-AT&T merger rumor was the result of a statement that appeared in PC Week magazine. The magazine reported that the two companies were still talking about a possible acquisition.

Corel Corp. appears close to acquiring WordPerfect subsidiary from Novell

Article Abstract:

Novell is near to selling its WordPerfect subsidiary to Corel for only a fraction of the $1.4 billion it paid in acquiring the word-processing software company in Mar 1994. Analysts speculate that Novell may receive as little as $50 million for WordPerfect, a reflection of the software's rapidly declining market share. While some analysts suggest that the acquisition of WordPerfect would positively diversify Corel's product line, others believe that WordPerfect will remain only a niche product and is not a sound investment. Corel may leverage WordPerfect's large installed base of users to enhance the market penetration of its own primary product, CorelDraw graphics software.
