A Cuisinart of phone technology fails to whip up enthusiasm

Article Abstract:

Sprint demonstrated its new communications network to investors but disclosed few details on the technology that is scheduled to become available to homes in mid-1999. Company stock rose only 50 cents, as investors noted incomplete technology and business plan specifics. Sprint likened its new system to the Cuisinart as a versatile telecommunications tool. A single existing connection will enable users to talk on the telephone, handle video images, browse the Internet and obtain high-speed data access simulatneously. Industry analyst Jeffrey Kagan said Sprint's pre-announcement compares to Windows 95. Sprint, which said it will invest $400 million to develop the system over the next few years, also is a rumored acquisition target.
