The strategy/structure debate: an examination of the performance implications

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern strategic management theory, focusing on there relationship between strategy, structure, and firm performance. Findings from an examination of 259 firms over a period of 36 years suggest that performance improvements are best achieved by firm uniqueness.

Management 'intuition': an interpretative account of structure and content of decision schemas using cognitive maps

This article examines the role of intuition on effective executive decision-making in several UK retail organizations. Research uses cognitive mapping to analyze the structure and content of managerial perceptions and decision-making schemas.

Important dimensions of strategic issues: separating the wheat from the chaff

Article Abstract:

Decision-makers in organizations use dimensions implicitly or explicitly to sort strategic issues. This article compares the dimensions implied by three literatures and dimensions generated by an empirical study. While some similarities are identified. there are striking differences between what the literature assumes and what dimensions decision-makers in the NY/NJ Port Authority use to sort issues. Implications for theories of decision-making and interpretation in organizations are discussed. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
