Management policies to improve the effectiveness of multi-station service orgnizations

Article Abstract:

Simulation of consumer demand and system service in a typical service office is undertaken using data from 54 management policies to determine the optimal labor scheduling, cross-training and demand management. Results indicate that greater efficiency can be achieved if the demand fluctuations can be smoothed because this would facilitate labor schedule matching with customer demand. This supports the practice of serving the most advanced customer first which would expedite waiting in queues.

Risk-averse decisions in business planning

Article Abstract:

The appropriate uses of stochastic dominance in predicting risk-averse decision making is studied. The expected utility theory is related to second-order stochastic dominance (SSD), which a risk-averse decision-maker usually follows, and variability ordering. Results indicate that subjective costs incurred by customers when waiting in queues is an increasing convex function, making variability ordering appropriate for comparing different queues.

A note on "an efficient zero-one formulation of the multilevel lot-sizing problem." (response to article by M.A. McKnew, C. Saydam and B. Coleman, Decision Sciences, p. 280, 1991)

Article Abstract:

A new approach to zero-one formulation for the dynamic multilevel lot-sizing problem with a single-end product is evaluated. Results indicate that the matrix matching the model constraints is not totally unimodular unless every squre submatrix of the constraint matrix has a value of 0, 1 or -1. The model thus may yield results to the linear relaxation that may not be an integer solution.
