Managing flexible automation

Article Abstract:

New programmable forms of automation open up the possibility of greatly enhanced production flexibility and a shift sway from product standardization. But the management challenges of a shift toward flexibility are enormous. This article reviews recent research on these challenges in strategy formulation, project evaluation, change management, technology implementation, human resource management, and industrial relations. The argument highlights the need to choose the right set of stabilities in order to successfully manage the desired dimensions of flexibility. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher).

The chief technology officer

Article Abstract:

This article explores the role of the chief technical officer (CTO) in orchestrating the large manufacturing corporation's product, process, and information technologies. It reports the results of a survey of 25 CTOs from Fortune 100 industrial companies as well as telephone interviews with 22 of these 25 executives. The article discusses the tasks and backgrounds of CTOs and examines the motivations for the creation of the CTO position. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
