Maritime industry

Article Abstract:

An overcapacity situation has been created in the maritime industry with the addition of new vessels to the global fleet by shipping lines since 1995. Slowdowns and work stoppages by labor unions in 1996 and 1997 have also led to lower profit margins and intensified cost control efforts. However, the market for tankers in 1997 and 1998 is expected to be strong. The potential investment rewards for these stocks are outweighed by the risks involved.

Maritime industry

Article Abstract:

The National Transportation League and Sea-Land have signed an agreement that allows shippers to to negotiate individual contracts, monitor unfair practices by foreign operators, and retain antitrust immunity. There will be short-term pressure on rates due to deregulation and additional supply, and the tanker fleet is expected to shrink. Earnings are expected to increase in 1996 and these stocks have three-to-five year investment potential.

Maritime industry

Article Abstract:

Share prices have increased for the maritime industry in 1996, except for Overseas Shipholding Group Inc. Although these stocks are timely for 1996, several markets have large shipping overcapacity, and this is expected to outstrip demand in 1996 and 1997. These stocks are expected to be volatile and risky in 1997 and should be avoided by conservative investors, although several have price appreciation potential through 2005.
