Internet start-up firm Soulmates, a matchmaking service, has attracted considerable interest from venture capitalists. The firm has processed 11,300 online credit transactions, and in 1999 to 2000 will achieve turnover of A$1.32 million.

The laws governing the protection of patent and copyright in Australia are discussed. The very low number of patentees successfully prosecuting a patent infringement and the measures needed to improve the patent system are explored.
