Measured response: Do emotions have shapes you can see and then reproduce? Manfred Clynes's 'Sentograf' finds distinct patterns in music as well as life; constructing a new giggle

Article Abstract:

Manfred Clynes, respected neuroscientist, is also known for his musical accomplishments, including piano recitals on the piano, and is a published poet. He is the inventor of the words 'cyborg,' and 'sentics,' which describes a new science that he proposes. According to Clynes, human emotions have shapes that can be reproduced using a computer. Marvin Minsky, the artificial intelligence (AI) researcher, considers Clynes's work to be both serious and significant. According to Minsky, AI is not moving forward because emotions are not yet understood as varieties of knowledge. If Clynes is right, it might be that a music synthesizer linked to a computer could synthesize a musical performance by Beethoven, recreating the music as it was meant to be played. Clynes uses a device, which he invented, to register and measure inner states of people listening to music or contemplating different emotions. Clynes calls his device a 'sentograph.'

Computer message prompts libel suit

Article Abstract:

Medphone Corp has filed the first known libel lawsuit for making allegedly false statements on a computer bulletin board. Medphone makes transtelephonic defibrillators which send shock therapy to a heart patient across telephone lines. The company claims that intentionally false statements posted by investor Peter J. DeNigris on Prodigy's 'Money Talk' bulletin board violated securities law and pushed down the price of its stock. The suit could chill the use of bulletin boards and put firms that run computer services at legal risk. In this case, Medphone did not sue Prodigy, and the network is complying with requests from both plaintiff and defendant. The legal liability of computer bulletin board owners and users has not been established.

Emerging multimedia products raise concerns over copyrights

Article Abstract:

The nascent market of multimedia technology is causing copyright holders considerable anxiety over the potential of copyright infringement. Multimedia technology uses a variety of media from sound to pictures to create presentations. Legal experts fear that the images, sounds and pictures will be used without proper reimbursement to those who hold their copyrights. Because of the nebulous nature of the market, many copyright holders are not sure what action to take; some are taking a wait-and-see approach while others are preparing for more preemptive action. Companies that are going to be involved in the potentially multibillion-dollar industry include Sony Corp, Time Warner Inc, Philips Industries NV and Microsoft Corp.
