Measuring the congruence between market requirements and manufacturing: a methodology and illustration

Article Abstract:

A measurement methodology evaluates market-manufacturing congruence in multi-variate manufacturing processes and market requirements. It uses multiple regression to test and align market entities in their profile dimensions. Moreover, dimensions, such as order size, lead-time-requirements, and delivery-speed-sensitivity account for the 25% of the variability in the manufacturing effectiveness measures. The method is a useful tool for further research on market-manufacturing congruence.

Planning and control in multi-cell manufacturing

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness of the Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), Kanban and Period Batch Control (PBC) systems in multi-cell manufacturing are studied. The three systems were found to be effective under just-in-time (JIT) conditions. However, PBC outperformed the other two when setup times and lot sizes were small. On the other hand, MRP performed better under non-JIT conditions and when setup times and lot sizes remain large.
