Media shops start to feel the squeeze

Article Abstract:

The trend toward specialization in the advertising business has increased since its deregulation in February 1997, leading to heavy competition in the media buying industry. Mitchell and Partners, one of the older companies in Australian media planning and buying, is not worried by the competition. In fact, founder and owner Harold Mitchell welcomes the newcomers for further strengthening and legitimizing the business.

Media buyers feel the squeeze in the new, deregulated order

The deregulation of Australia's advertising industry has resulted in price wars that threaten the existence of many agencies, especially media buyers. Their sector is labor-intensive, requiring extensive human resources and technology for needed research. Industry observers advise buyers to explain the value of their services to clients, rather than cut prices.

The big golden book continues to explore beyond the printed page

The Yellow Pages had 80% of the Australian advertising market in 1997 in classified directories which totalled $904.7 million. Pacific Access, which manages Australia's Yellow Pages and White Pages directories, believes online advertising will have an impact. Pacific Access introduced its first Yellow Pages Internet site in Dec 1994.
