Article Abstract:
Stocks in the health care industry have become a timely investment for 1997. The aging of the American population and its growing need for medical care is making the rising expense of health care a major political challenge. The same needs are being seen in Japan and Canada as well as the US. Although the pressure for hospital closure is mounting through 1999-2001, the US is ahead of other countries. Investors should focus on near-term prospects.

Medical services firms are diversifying to meet the needs of the aged. There are long term care providers, home health care providers and assisted living providers. Long term care service needs are expected to increase as the US population gets older. Specific medical services stocks should be used to diversify a healthy portfolio.
