Membership and management of a 'virtual' team: the perspectives of a research manager
Article Abstract:
The role of information and communications technologies in the management distributed R&D communities was examined. The Virtual Mobility and Distributed Laboratories (VMDL) project within the European Commission Human Capital and Mobility Programme of DGXII was used as a case study to analyze the management and organization of distributed teams. It was found that the effective use of information technology can only be realized if there is support from the members of various communities in combination with appropriate organizational structures and attitudes.

Article Abstract:
Information technology (IT) plays a critical role in aligning R&D activities with core competencies within an organization. However, the use of IT decision support in R&D management poses some problems. These problems arise due to the tendency of managers to use their right brain to solve business problems in contrast to computers which process hard data according to the analytic and rational style of the left brain. Thus, it is imperative to balance the left- and right-brain modes of analysis and communication to use IT effectively in R&D management.
