Menem unveils austerity plan

Menem had Finance Minister Domingo Cavallo introduce his financial plan, which was designed to help reduce the country's burgeoning budget deficit and to improve investor confidence because of the weak economic conditions in Mexico. Increased tax revenues and budget cuts comprise the plan.

Balladur sets austerity budget

French Premier Balladur announced a plan to reduce the 1993 budget deficit to 4.5% of GDP on May 10, 1993. France's budget deficit for 1993 was estimated at $76 billion. The French government planned to give more independence to the Bank of France.
