Packard son opposes H-P's pact for Compaq, dealing new setback

Article Abstract:

Sixty-one year old David W. Packard, the oldest child of the late David Packard, has voiced his opposition to the proposed merger of H-P and Compaq Computer Corp. His statement comes just a short time after Walter B. Hewlett voiced his concern that a merger would make H-P vulnerable to the 'cutthroat' PC industry. Between the two heirs, their foundations and family members is the ownership of seven percent of H-P stock. The David and Lucille Packard Foundation, which owns 10% of H-P's stock, is mulling the merger over after hiring an outside analyst. Opposition from the Foundation is expected to scotch the proposed merger.
