Mine workers widen coal strike

The United Mine Workers extended its strike to include mines owned by Consol Energy Inc and Peabody Holding Company Inc in Kentucky and West Virginia. The number of workers involved in the strike to obtain better terms from the Bituminous Coal Operators Assn increased to 14,000.

QVC, Home Shopping Network to merge

The two largest television shopping networks, QVC Network Inc and Home Shopping Network Inc, announced on Jul 12, 1993, that they would merge in a $1.4 billion stock-swap deal. The new firm will keep the QVC name and be headed by QVC chmn Barry Diller.

BA, USAir announce new merger plan

British Airways (BA) and USAir Group announced on Jan 21, 1993, that they had reached an agreement on a plan where BA would acquire a 21.8% stake in USAir in a two-step process. BA would also gain the right to name three of USAir's 16 directors.
