Multi-User 'Supermicros' Are Taking Over from the Micro

Article Abstract:

Just as minicomputers replaced mainframes in many applications, so microcomputers have replaced the minis. However, the single-user micro is often underutilized, incompatible with the central system, and serviced separately. Now the multi-terminal microcomputer systems, or 'supermicros', are competing with the single workstations. These 'shared-resource' systems allow several users on separate terminals to perform various tasks using one processor, operating system, and disk drive. UNISON, which runs on the Motorola 68000 chip is the first Australian-manufactured supermicro system. UNISON uses the UNIX operating system.
