Nationalised industries in retrospect

Article Abstract:

The nationalization of industries in Great Britain is examined in the years between 1945 and 1950, including coal, electricity, gas, and transportation, with the instances in which the form of the nationalization was a public corporation emphasized. The trend in Britain has been away from nationalization in recent years and toward privatization, and while it is impossible to know what the trends of the future will be, now is an opportune time in which to review the British economic policy. The primary goal of the research is to describe the factors that influenced the trends toward and away from nationalization since 1945 rather than to present a case for or against the nationalization of particular industries. Important to the discussion is the inherent problem of the schizophrenic nature of dual criteria (accountability to the market and to government).
