Net cruisers beware: I brake for all career services

Article Abstract:

Career services available on the Internet and World Wide Web can be difficult to find, but careful searches can produce useful career information and job opportunities, especially for high-tech jobs. An Internet connection requires a modem and a gateway provider, who usually charge users on a flat fee basis. Career information can be found on the Whole Internet Catalog, which provides a list of Internet resources. The Career Resource Homepage offers access to career-oriented databases such as the Internet Jobs Surfer job bank. The Online Career Center features career assistance, a resume collection, information for minorities and women, and listings of professional groups. It also offers Department of Labor statistics, books and directories relevant to job searching. The Yahoo World Wide Web guide provides access to information about jobs in fields such as finance, physics, accounting and management consulting.

Technology managers start to gain status as information rules

Article Abstract:

A growing number of CIOs are widening their corporate influence. These CIOs are reporting directly to CEOs, rather than lower-level executives, as well as joining new committees. IT systems have basically defined Chicago Title & Trust, said Pres and CEO John Rau, who also has authored 'Secrets from the Search Firm Files,' a book on corporate advancement. Technology managers are strengthening their position at financial-services companies, which seek answers to critical technology questions, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. Experts say ambitious IT specialists can earn promotions by overcoming their perception as technological experts who fail to understand the enterprise's business issues. Options include pursuing MBAs, assuming additional responsibilities and improving communications skills.

Storage Technology to launch its vaunted Iceberg; many rave about the data-storing device, but doubts linger

Article Abstract:

Storage Technology Corp (StorageTek) plans the release of Iceberg, a long-awaited innovative storage-device technology, for Tuesday, Jan 28, 1992. Iceberg stores large quantities of data on arrays of 5.25-inch disk drives. The device is said to cut data-storage costs and at the same time provide continuous storage operations immune to mechanical failures. While StorageTek boasts that competitors will not have products matching the sophistication of Iceberg for at least two to three years, skeptics question whether StorageTek will be able to succeed. In a pre-release offer, about 2,000 clients agreed to sign non-disclosure pacts for Iceberg, which in turn, has resulted in over $50 million in sales before the release date.
