For other Internet players, a scramble for shelter

Article Abstract:

The proposed combination of America Online (AOL) and Netscape may trigger further consolidation among World Wide Web players. Excite could be exploring a partnership with Microsoft, according to insiders. Another possibility includes forming a three-way alliance with Yahoo and Amazon.com to compete with Internet giants AOL and Microsoft. Paring the unwieldy Internet medium into several leaders can benefit the market, according to Yahoo CIO Jeff Mallett, who cited the emergence of three television broadcasting networks. Lycos CEO Bob Davis added that advertisers can benefit from a less complicated market. Excite and Netscape earlier in 1998 agreed on a deal in which Netscape's Netcenter Web site would offer numerous prominent links to Excite until 2000. Terms also call for Excite to provide Netscape with advertising and programming services, as well as $70 million in advertising guarantees.
