Network Associates will use Dutch unit to circumvent encryption export rules

Article Abstract:

Network Associates said it will sell its Pretty Good Software (PGP) data-security software to international customers from a Dutch subsidiary. The move represents the strongest challenge to Department of Commerce export restrictions on strong-encryption technology, according to Forrester Research. Network Associates said its new plan meets overseas demand for software that protects e-mail confidentiality without allowing law-enforcement agencies to monitor the communications. The government exceptions to the export ban apply only when law enforcement gains access to the software, except for some customers like banks. The Amsterdam-based unit will conduct sales to European and Asian customers, according to Network Associates, which acquired Pretty Good Privacy Inc. in Dec 1997.

Bill Gates's bet: do for vaccines what he did for software

Article Abstract:

Over the next five years the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate $750 million to vaccinate 25 mil children in 70 developing nations. Officials are hoping this will jumpstart demand for these products enough to bring down their costs. In this way the cycle of investment and research will be supported by a mass market. Such a development would parallel the advances toward cheap, ubiquitous computing that Mr. Gates and Microsoft have shaped and participated in. The donation will be distributed across foundations and international agencies to inoculate children against hepatitis, influenza, malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS, as sera is made available.
