New corporate gurus tap India's brainpower to galvanize economy

Article Abstract:

Two of India's most successful entrepreneurs have taken different routes to become the heads of their respective software companies, but each has become an icon of the new economic model in India that seems destined to greatly benefit the nation's developing economy. Azim Premji is chairman of Wipro Ltd. and N.R. Narayana Murthy the head of Infosys Technologies Ltd. Mr. Premji founded Wipro as a computer maker. The company later moved into software hoping to develop branded products but has since had to move more into the services arena to be more competitive. Mr. Murthy and six colleagues founded Infosys in 1981. The company has some of the highest operating standards seen in an Indian corporation. The company has adopted U.S. accounting standards and believes in spreading its wealth among all its employees, not just the executives.
