New planets, galaxies, dark matter seen

Article Abstract:

The American Astronomical Society met from Jan 15-17, 1996, in San Antonio, TX, and presented their latest research findings. One report detailed the discovery of planets outside the solar system that could support water. Another report found evidence of more galaxies than previously thought.

China fires test missiles near Taiwan; seen as preelection intimidation tactic

Article Abstract:

China fired four missiles at Taiwan in Mar 1996, the third time since Jul 1995 that live ammunition has been fired at the island. The actions were viewed as ways to undermine the likelihood that Taiwan Pres Lee Teng-hui would be reelected and demonstrate that Taiwan is still part of China.
