New product portfolio management: practices and performance

Article Abstract:

Portfolio management plays a key role in the development of business enterprises, as it determines the success of projects and the value of their financial portfolios. Results gathered from an analysis involving 205 US-based companies revealed that benchmarks generate the best performance results among all metrics evaluated. Aside from providing well-defined procedures, benchmarks give way to high-value projects, while creating a balance among strategies.

The relative importance of new product success determinants - perception versus reality

Article Abstract:

Success in new product development is examined from management and actual performance perspectives. Success determinants exhibited substantial differences across the two standpoints. The quality of program execution in product process development emerged as the key element to success. Failure by some firms has also been attributed to their intense focus on technical operations over a product's marketing and business aspects.

Benchmarking the firm's critical success factors in new product development

Article Abstract:

Benchmarking against other firms contributes to the success of new product development (NPD) programs. Program profitability and program impact may be used to assess the performance of NPD programs. Factors crucial to NPD success include: a well-communicated product strategy; adequate resources; commitment of senior management to the project; and strategic focus and synergy.
