New trends in consulting favor those who specialise and help each other

The clients of consultants want individuals who are professional, can prove they have excellent presentation skills and have established a good record. As clients demand more, consultants work in smarter ways. Some consultants are working together to share marketing and administration costs. Trends that have taken place between mid-1995 and late 1997 include greater competition, greater professionalism and more international assignments.

Australian Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu's new CEO Lynn Odland brings management innovation to the accounting firm, propelling it from last place in the Big Five to tied for third with a profit increase of 54% in the first year. A fundamental change has been the use of "signals", or principles, which focus on positivity and success and were adapted from a similar philosophy employed by Dreyer's Grand.

On-the-ball Kiwi firm builds on a foundation of business consulting

Vivienne Brownrigg founded her own business consulting company in Te Puke, New Zealand, after leaving an executive position with another firm. After a slow start, the business improved and she made it even better by dropping clients who did not pay or failed to pay on time. Most of her employees are women who work flexible hours, including time out to pick up children after school.
