Lucent and other tech firms unveil stock deals

Lucent Technologies Inc. will acquire optical fiber-to-cable transmission equipment maker Ortel Corp. for $2.92 bil in stock. Kana Communications Inc. is buying Silknet Software Inc. for $3.94 bil in stock, strengthening its e-commerce software offerings. In a $2.77 bil stock deal, Akamai Technologies Inc. add audio and video streaming to its Internet server software with the acquisition of Intervu Inc. For $1.04 bil in stock Corel Corp. purchased Inprise/Borland Corp., in an effort to broaden its Linux application offerings.

Nortel plans to acquire CoreTek for up to $1.43 billion in stock

Article Abstract:

Start-up CoreTek Inc. will be acquired by Nortel Networks Corp. for around $1.43 billion in stock as part of Nortel's ongoing effort to improve carrying capacity of fiber-optics lines for communications. The move may move Nortel into competition with firms like JDS Uniphase Corp., the manufacturer of advanced laser systems for fiber-optical networks.

Nortel in talks to buy Qtera in $3 billion deal

Article Abstract:

Nortel Networks Corp.'s purchase of Qtera Corp. would give it Qtera's fiber optic transmission technology. This technology extends the distance a signal can travel without regeneration to 1000 miles. Nortel would use it to save money on regeneration equipment as the company bids on telcom equipment contracts related to Internet expansion. Qwest Communications International has successfully tested the equipment. Privately held Qtera is capitalized at $43 million.
