Now for Australia's next big reform: population

Article Abstract:

Kim Beazley, a political candidate in Australia's next federal election, argues that Australia would benefit from a larger population. Beazley feels a balanced skilled migrant population growth would transform business and employment and confirm Australia's position as a major growth country. A bigger working-age population would offset the extra costs Australia would see as the population ages. Beazley plans to establish an Office of Population, which would advise a future Labor government.

Global warming pledge a time-bomb for Australia

Article Abstract:

The Australian Government is gambling that the United States will continue its policy against ratification of the Protocol to the Convention on Climate Change, 1997 (Kyoto Protocol) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2008. However, American corporations are in favor of the Kyoto Protocol. Australia's 1990 pledge of a 108% emission limit will increase and pass the effective rate of 120% by 2005, given the country's projected annual growth rate of 3%.

A tax system that will change business and Australia

Article Abstract:

Australia needs to reform its current corporate tax system to retain and attract business and be globally competitive. To achieve this, Australia should reduce its headline company tax rate to 30%, adopt a capital gains tax similar to the one used in the United States, and promote research and development. The current tax deductibility for research needs to be increased to 180%.
