Now, you can police your kids' desktops, but in a nice way

Article Abstract:

Edmark's $29 KidDesk Internet Safe software is a simple and effective tool for managing the use of the family computer by children. The Windows 95/98-based program offers several shortcuts for parents who need to make some choices regarding their childrens' computing environment. The software provides each child with an individualized desktop with only the icons for specific programs and Web pages selected by the parents. The child never sees the normal Windows desktop and does not have access to Windows' normal features. Adults use a secret key combination and password to circumvent KidDesk and to use Windows. The KidDesk desktop includes miniprograms that are fun for children, as well as a calendar and a 'telephone' for leaving recorded messages for the parents. The software automatically disables Web links that are not authorized by the parents.

Now you can make your own CDs with push-button ease

Article Abstract:

Philips' $649 CDR880 is a well designed CD player/recorder that produces great sound quality CDs. The recorder plays prerecorded audio CDs, and includes the usual display for elapsed time, play buttons and track numbers as well as a remote control. Recording is easy with the CDR880, simply select either an analog or digital connection to the source and whether the recording will be manual or automatic. The only step greatly differing from those used in recording tapes is at the end, when each home-recorded CD has to be finalized before it can be used in a regular CD player. The most confusing hassle in recording CDs involves choosing a blank CD. Their are 2 industry standards; CD-RW and CD-R. CD-RW disks are priced approximately $30 and can be recorded on, then recorded over. CD-R disks are priced about $6 and can only be recorded on once.
